The Park is home to a delightful array of mammals, both big and small! From squirrels, rabbits, voles and coyotes, there's always something fascinating to spot.

Reptiles, Fish and Amphibians

We have a variety of reptiles, fish, and amphibians! You might spot turtles like red-eared sliders and painted turtles basking in the sun, or catch a glimpse of snakes slithering through the grass. Our lakes and ponds are teeming with fish, creating a vibrant aquatic ecosystem. Please remember, do not fish in the lake and releasing pet turtles and fish into our lakes disrupts the natural balance and harms the ecosystem. Let's work together to keep our park's wildlife thriving!

Bugs and Insects

There are cool creepy crawlies all around the Park, both high and low on the ground! Our milkweeds attract beautiful Monarch butterflies, adding a splash of colour during the warmer months. We've also hosted Moth Nights in partnership with the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA), where you can observe moths with experts. Interested in joining? Keep an eye on our Events webpage in the summer for more details!

Plants

flowers

Downsview Park boasts a naturalized landscape, allowing much of the land to grow as it naturally would. Unfortunately, invasive species like burdock, thistle, and garlic mustard are sprinkled across the park. Fortunately, we have initiatives to tackle this issue, including youth stewardship, community , and school groups to help with removals. In their place, we are planting native species to restore the natural balance. Thanks to grants, we are also planting trees, with community and school groups volunteering to make the park greener and more vibrant.
