Location

Join us as we celebrate National Moth Week and become a moth observer or “moth-er!”, for a FREE moth night at Downsview Park. We’ll be partnering with the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA) to put this special event on.

All about moths
Moths can be found all over Downsview Park. You might already know that they’re nocturnal creatures who are drawn to light, but did you also know that there are more than 10,000 different species of moths that live within North America alone? To identify a moth, you want to look for scales (all moths have them) and fur (most moths are a little furry)!

In 2021, the group spotted 54 species of moth!

What exactly is a moth night?
Our night will start off with a brief evening nature walk led by Downsview Park staff. During the walk members of TEA will be setting up the perfect conditions for moth observation using some sheets and a very bright light. After the walk, participants will get a chance to see moths in action as they are attracted to light. All species will be recorded and added to the Park's biodiversity records.

What to bring
- Sunglasses (for the UV light that will be used)
- Moth ID book (optional)
- Headlamp or flashlight (optional)
- Bug spray (optional)

Weather
This event is weather dependant. The program may need to be rescheduled if there is a chance of rain or high winds that could damage moth equipment. The rain date is Wednesday July 27, 2022.
