Geothermal technologies in Downsview Park
Geothermal systems use the earth’s natural heating and cooling abilities to control the heating/cooling systems in buildings. In cooperation with Toronto and Region Conservation, a major tenant at 70 Canuck Avenue, Downsview Park has initiated and tested sustainable energy solutions. Built in 1971, the building at 70 Canuck Avenue is the newest building in the park. The new geothermal system uses a series of 25 bore holes with piping that transfers heat either into the ground in summer for cooling or out of the ground in winter for heating. The new geothermal system will improve the building’s energy efficiency and reduce reliance on carbon-based forms of energy as part of PDP’s sustainability mandate.
